Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced the expansion of its ToPSync(TM) product platform with the availability of the ACS9593, an IEEE1588v2 precision time protocol (PTP) slave device that is a cost-effective, high-precision time synchronization solution for deployment in wireless base stations.
The ACS9593 device provides time recovery and delivery to networking equipment in wireless base stations used in 3G, 4G, WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. The highly precise device delivers time alignment performance better than +/-2 us and frequency alignment performance better than +/-10 ppb when measured on a managed five-switch Gigabit Ethernet network under G.8261 test conditions. Previously this level of accuracy could only be achieved through the use of highly accurate and costly combinations of GPS modules and oscillators.
With the ACS9593, carriers can deploy wireless femtocells and pico base stations in large office buildings, apartment complexes and on campuses to improve coverage, and use an IP network to connect them cost-effectively to a central switch. Before ToPSync(TM) commercial availability, providing synchronization meant using a GPS-based solution, which required costly building retrofits to provide line of sight to the satellite and the use of an expensive oscillator for periods of GPS service outage.
"Our ToPSync platform takes the 1588v2 protocol and makes it a game changer in wireless backhaul because it enables brand new markets for wireless carriers," said Rich Lansdowne, Product Group Manager at Semtech. "The ACS9593 makes this especially true for smaller base stations that are now shaking up the industry."
Semtech's ToPSync product platform gives carriers a cost-effective way to adopt IEEE1588v2 synchronization solutions and move away from intricate GPS systems that have high installation costs and require the ability to access GPS satellites. The Semtech IEEE1588v2 system is much more ubiquitous and has no ongoing operating costs.
