Verizon Wireless announced that they've sold 1.2 million LTE devices in their second quarter, and that 69 percent of their net retailed postpaid additions came from LTE devices or Apple's iPhone. At this time Verizon's 4G LTE network is available in 102 markets, and will be available in 175 markets covering 185 million people by the end of the year. In addition to the existing wireless modems they've released three new LTE devices in the second quarter, the Samsung Droid Charge, LG Revolution and MiFi 4510 Hotspot by Novatel Wireless. "The company commented that network spending on 3G was well ahead of capacity requirements for the year, and 4G LTE spend was slightly ahead of requirements. Management specifically cited a second-half pullback in EVDO spending, due to the acceleration of EVDO build-out during the first half of the year," Notter wrote. "This doesn't surprise us--Verizon's EVDO spending has historically been front-end loaded. In recent years, the company has surprised to the upside with their Q3 and Q4 EVDO spending. While we find it reasonable to think that EVDO spending might see a slight pullback for 2H'11, we think it's relatively unlikely that it would pullback significantly (or stop)." Related Links:

Customers are reporting that Sprint is quietly expanding 4G WiMAX to Columbia, which allows residents to enjoy download speeds that typically run around 3-6Mbps down. There hasn't been an official statement from Sprint, but users are reporting that they've been able to connect to 4G WiMAX for more than a month now. The coverage isn't as extensive as any officially launched 4G WiMAX markets at this time, but it's likely that more coverage will occur when the market officially goes live. “It’s possible that customers may stumble upon a part of the network that is turned on for testing as Clearwire works to prepare the network for launch,” said Pamela Sankey, a Sprint spokesperson. “While we haven’t officially launched 4G in your area, any speeds, connection or coverage that customers may experience on our 4G network today isn’t necessarily representative of what they will see in that city at launch. If you have a 4G-enabled device and find a 4G signal, please try it and see what you can do with 4G today.” Related Links:

Yesterday, Apple officially released Mac OSX Lion "10.7" and is only available in the app store currently as a 3.5GB download. If you're using a wireless modem through Sprint, Verizon, AT&T etc this may pose a problem on a 5GB cap, which would represent almost 70% of your monthly bandwidth allotment. There are rumors that Apple will allow Mac users to to download OSX Lion locally at Apple stores and a flash version will be available in August for $69.99. If you're not close to an Apple store and have a low data cap, we'd recommend going to a local Starbucks, Barnes & Noble etc that offers free WiFi access to save on your monthly limit. With large downloads like this and limited bandwidth our WiFi as WAN capable routers come in handy allowing you to easily grab onto outside WiFi to save on your 3G/4G data usage. If you're using a 3G/4G wireless modem please visit our EVDOForums and let us know what type of modem you're using and if it's working on the new OS. We will be testing a variety of modems to determine modems that work or don't work with the new Lion OS. If you find that your particular modem isn't supported with the latest release we'd recommend purchasing a 3G/4G Router, which will allow you to plug the modem into the router and completely bypass the Sprint Smartview or Verizon VZAccess Manager software! There has been a lot of talk between Sprint and LightSquared to develop a 4G LTE network and it's raided questions of how they'll manage LTE and their existing 4G WiMAX network. Sprint isn't a stranger when it comes to managing multiple networks like when Nextel merged with Sprint. Thankfully, WiMAX and LTE are a lot more similar and the technical barriers of hosting both services are being overcome already. The biggest hurdle that Sprint will face is getting a chipset manufacture to develop dual radios for a reasonable price and Huawei is already launching multiple convergent LTE/WiMAX ideas. These products will support multi-mode network connections, different frequency ranges and global roaming, which will allow you to easily switch a device between different networks. If Sprint can successfully manage multiple networks they could end up in a great position globally by offering devices that will work across the world.

Sprint and LightSquared should be announcing a 4G LTE deal that could be worth up to $5 billion on July 28, which can help them compete if the AT&T/T-Mobile merger goes through. According to Cnet, LightSquared will start work on Sprint's backbone almost immediately and testing will begin early next year. These upgrades are estimated to save Sprint almost $10 billion over a seven year period. When these two join forces it should help them compete against Verizon's growing 4G LTE network and AT&T's soon to be deployed 4G network. The major advantage that Sprint and LightSquared has over the competition is the fact their 4G networks are the last truly unlimited data service available for mobile devices.
