LightSquared Near $2 Billion a Year Sprint Deal

LightSquared is nearing an 8-year agreement with Sprint, worth approximately $2 billion per year, which would allow them to use Sprint's network equipment and towers. Within the proposed agreement, they'd pay Sprint $2 billion per year to rent space on their network in order to launch their own high-speed network, according to a person who asked not to be named because the details aren't public yet. LightSquared will be backed by Falcone's Harbinger Capital Partners, using Sprint's network on approximately 40,000 cellular broadcast towers with their own wireless airwaves to provide high-speed service.

"Two billion dollars a year would be in the right ballpark for a network-sharing agreement," said a second person on the subject, but that person didn't mention anything else in regards to the potential deal. The spokeswoman from LightSquared declined to comment and nobody from Sprint was available to question. This is a scenario that has the potential to be a win/win solution for both LightSquared and Sprint by helping them pay for a $5 billion network modernization plan announced last year. Sprint has stated that they'll be announcing more details on their network plans around midyear.

Samsung to Launch 4G Tablet This Year, Galaxy S III in 2012

Samsung's head of mobile, J.K. Shin, recently spoke with Dow Jones in an interview and discussed the company's plans for the next generation Galaxy S smartphones and 4G tablets. Shin said "the race for 4G has already started. 4G transition is inevitable particularly for tablets because it requires faster download speeds than smartphones to handle bigger volume content." The 4G tablet will likely mirror the original Samsung Tab, but feature upgraded hardware and support for the latest 4G network. Shin also mentioned their plan to launch a third version of the Galaxy S, potentially the Galaxy S III, in the first half of 2012.

ZTE to Launch 4G LTE Devices Later This Year, Windows Phone in Early 2012

Speaking to Reuters, ZTE CEO Cheng Lixin said that their company wants to make 4G LTE devices available in the U.S in the second half of the year. They also plan to introduce a Windows Phone with the Mango update in the first part of 2012 and expect an LTE tablet within the same time frame. They've seen how popular 4G LTE and Windows phones are becoming and ZTE sees this as a great opportunity to grow alongside them. However, this isn't a guarantee that their phones will end up on AT&T's or Verizon's 4G lineup. The only other carrier that would be a choice at this time is MetroPCS, which was actually the first carrier to offer 4G LTE in the U.S.

LG Revolution, Verizon's Third 4G LTE phone, Arrives Thursday

Verizon Wireless has announced that the 4G-capable LG Revolution will be available in stores and online Thursday for $249.99 with a 2/yr service plan. The Revolution will feature a 4.3" touchscreen display like the HTC Thunderbolt and use a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor to power the Android 2.2 OS. This phone is being dubbed as an "entertainment powerhouse" by Verizon, because of Netflix capabilities to watch the latest movies and TV shows. If you're not a Netflix subscriber, don't worry - the Revolution will also run Adobe Flash player and provide Dolby Mobile sound with HD video recording and playback. It will also feature dual cameras, a 5MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing camera for Video chat and come with a 16GB pre-installed microSD card.

After the launch of the Samsung Droid Charge 4G, this will mark the third LTE-capable smartphone that Verizon has made available to the public. If you're in a Verizon 4G LTE market you can expect to see anywhere from 5-12Mbps down and 2-5Mbps up. Verizon's 4G LTE currently serves 50 markets and they plan to offer 4G LTE in 175 markets by the end of 2011 and cover their entire 3G network with 4G by 2013.

Samsung Droid Charge 4G LTE Android Smartphone Now Available From Verizon

Verizon Wireless recently released the new Droid Charge by Samsung, which is Verizon's second 4G LTE-capable smartphone powered by Android 2.2. This will be one of the first smartphones to feature a Super AMOLED Plus display technology, which you must see in person to experience the full effect of the display. The primary benefit of this type of display is that it offers superior viewing angles when in direct sunlight, so if you live in an area where the sun shines often, this could be the perfect phone for you. The phone comes with a $300 price tag, making it $50 more than the HTC Thunderbolt, but the Suprer AMOLED screen could be worth the premium.

AT&T's 4G LTE Network Could Be Launching June 30

According to Electronista, AT&T could be starting their 4G LTE rollout in New York City on June 30th and expanding to Los Angeles on July 24th. They've stated that their LTE network could reach speeds upwards of 15Mbps on mobile devices, which puts them slightly over the 5-12Mbps average Verizon claims with their 4G network. There is no ETA on how long it will take them to roll out their service nationwide, however, if their 3G network is any indicator it could be a while. With AT&T currently branding their HSPA+ network as "4G", it will be interesting to see what they call their LTE (Long Term Evolution) network, since the service will be faster and modems like the 4G-branded USBConnect Shockwave aren't LTE-capable.
