After numerous delays, Verzion has finally released the HTC Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt is available for $249.99 with a new 2-yr contract. With several carriers moving to usage-based tiers for their data service, Verizon choose to keep the service unlimited with their mandatory $29.99/mo data plan. However, if you want to use the mobile hotspot feature to share the connection with other devices, you'll be limited to 2GB. This function is the same feature that made phones like the HTC EVO and Samsung Epic very popular, although those phones feature unlimited access on both 3G and 4G even with the hotspot feature activated. On top of the mandatory data plan, most users will also opt to pay for voice service, which starts at $39.99/mo for 450 minutes. With this phone's release Verizon is doing something that's been unheard of until now: they're offering a data-only plan for $49.99/mo that comes with a 5GB limit. This could be a great low-cost alternative for users that use voice and text services through applications like Google Voice and primarily want the Thunderbolt for internet access. The HTC Thunderbolt will be shipping with Android 2.2 OS and features a 4.3" inch display, 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor, 8MP camera and more!

Last year we noted on customers that reported that Clearwire was throttling customers who downloaded too much data within a short amount of time. Clearwire is now facing a potential class action lawsuit from angry customers who say they were promised high speed internet, only to get throttled back to near dial up speeds. This suit was filed earlier this month in a federal court in Seattle, accusing the company of practices similar to a Ponzi scheme. The 15 plaintiffs in this case allege "Clearwire advertises and sells a service, knowing in advance that there is no way it can provide such service on an ongoing basis. Someday, if Clearwire sells enough subscriptions, it may have sufficient funds to go back and create the infrastructure to support its Internet service and make good on its promises.” The plaintiffs are seeking class-action status as well as damages for Clearwire's deception. Clearwire responded: “Our network management practices comply with applicable law and are consistent with our acceptable use policy. The lawsuit grossly mischaracterizes how we operate our network, and we plan a vigorous defense against the allegations.” Their 4G WiMAX service is currently available in 70+ markets, mirroring the coverage that Sprint offers with their 4G WiMAX smartphones and wireless modems. The major difference between Sprint and CLEAR is that Sprint doesn't throttle 4G connections and allows users truly unlimited access to their network. Related Links:

Over the weekend Speedtest.net has released a very interesting tool that has the potential to provide useful real world results for consumers. For those of you unfamiliar with this site, it allows you to test your connection speed to see your real world latency, download and upload speeds. This information is particularly useful for people wondering if " an antenna will help" them to increase their performance at their location. We've all seen the carriers make claims at the fastest 3G network and we now have a tool to see if the carrier can back up their claims! If you'd like to participate, we've created some different waves to see how you stack up against other users. This service is FREE, and we welcome all to participate to help build the most accurate depiction of wireless providers and the real world speeds they deliver. Please select your carrier from the list and click on "Join this Wave". You can then run a speedtest and you'll be able to see your stats as well as the average download, upload and latency results for your wireless carrier. You may also click on the competitors SpeedWave to see their average results, but please don't run a test if you're not on that carrier so we can have the most accurate depiction for each carrier. Join a 3G/4G SpeedWave:This is a community project and will allow anybody that has a 3G or 4G phone/datacard to participate by running a speedtest to contribute. The results are then stored by country, region, cities, ISP and browsers giving you detailed stats to see where the tests have occurred and the results. You'll be able to see the average download, upload and ping times to get a more accurate depiction to see what type of real world performance you can expect from the carrier of your choice. Below is a screenshot of a SpeedWave started as an example. When you enter Speedtest.net you'll have the ability to create an account, which will allow you to to keep track of your stats and gives you an icon that rates your connection within several sub categories. Here are the following categories you can fall into for bragging rights or let you know if it's time to switch providers! SpeedWave Badge Winners:- Champion of the Internet - Best combined download/upload speeds
- Touchdown - Fastest download speed
- 1-UP - Fastest upload speed
- Punctual - Best latency
- Sprint - Shortest distance tested
- First Loser - Second best combined download/upload speeds

Firmware 1.8.1 provides support for the Verizon Pantech UML290 (left) and LG VL600 (right) modems Last week, Cradlepoint released firmware version 1.8.0 for the MBR1200, MBR1000, MBR900, CTR500, CBA250, CBA750, and MBR800 routers, but while it promised support for Verizon's LTE modems, unfortunately many users experienced problems. Luckily, Cradlepoint has responded quickly and has released firmware version 1.8.1, which solves the problems and allows the UML290 and VL600 modems to be used in the CTR500/MBR/CBA routers without issue! This latest version fixed the following problems: - 1.8.0 Pantech UML290/LG VL600 3G Connectivity Issue (no connect/frequent disconnect)
- 1.8.0 Pantech UML290/LG VL600 LTE mode general performance improvements
- 1.8.0 Pantech UML290/LG VL600 LTE mode Lost IP Lease recovery
- 1.8.0 Pantech UML290/LG VL600 non-default DNS Server support improvement
- 1.8.0 Pantech UML290 Signal Strength display update
As an added bonus, Cradlepoint also added a feature that allows LTE uses to select which mode they're using their modem in - with firmware 1.8.1, VL600/UML290 users do NOT have to run the Pantech Utility to lock their modems into 3G or 4G mode before using it a router! The Samsung Stealth (SCH-i510), the first Samsung phone developed to operate on Verizon's latest 4G LTE network, made an appearance in an FCC filing today. This device was originally expected to launch in the summer of 2011, however, with today's filling it may arrive on Verizon sooner than anticipated - likely around the same time as the launch of the HTC Thunderbolt 4G smartphone. The Stealth will record video at 1080P (a first for a mobile phone!), offer a 4.3" super AMOLED display, HDMI video out and an 8MP camera. Samsung phones have become a popular choice amongst high-end power users, particularly after the success of the 4G Samsung Epic developed for Sprint's 4G WiMAX network. We look forward to seeing how the LTE-capable Stealth compares!

LightSquared and the United States GPS Industry Council File Their First Joint Report to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) RESTON, Va.--LightSquared, the nation’s first wholesale-only integrated wireless broadband and satellite network provider, and the United States Global Positioning System (GPS) Industry Council (USGIC), the leading organization worldwide representing the interests of the satellite navigation industry and users, announced both the filing of their first joint report as required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the formation of a technical working group required by the FCC. Last month the FCC granted LightSquared’s waiver to integrate terrestrial broadband network wireless services with satellite communications along with a requirement to complete an interference study. The grant required several interested parties who use neighboring radio spectrum to establish a working group to fully study potential interference concerns and, in particular, to identify any measures necessary to prevent potential interference to GPS. LightSquared and the USGIC, working cooperatively, issued their first joint filing to the FCC Friday, February 25. It outlines the key milestones for the overall analyses that they plan to conduct together. The next report will be filed in March, and it will provide the FCC with details about test plans and procedures. Joint filings providing progress reports will be delivered to the FCC each month, with the final report due June 15, 2011. Related Links LightSquared 4G Launches 4G LTE
