CLEAR Reports Growth for 4G WiMAX

Clearwire, whose investors include Sprint Nextel, Comcast, and Google, may have reported a fourth quarter loss this week due to the costs of building out their CLEAR 4G WiMAX network, but they also reported that their subscriber base and revenues have grown more than expected. Building out a brand new network is expensive, and Clearwire expected the 4th quarter losses, so that was not necessarily bad news. The good news is that their revenues during the fourth quarter grew more than expected as they added 87,000 net new retail customers - more than the first three quarters of 2009 combined!

Bill Morrow, Clearwire’s chief executive, had this to say about his company's 4th quarter performance: “Over the past year, Clearwire established its leadership in 4G mobile broadband services by building the largest 4G network in North America, raising additional financing to fuel our growth, supporting the 4G wholesale service launches for three of the most prominent communications companies in the US, and delivering solid financial results in a challenging economic environment."

2009 was a big year for CLEAR, as they added service in a number of new markets including Chicago, Seattle, and more, and secured funding to enable them to expand even more in 2010. CLEAR has reported that they'll be launching their 4G WiMAX service in quite a few more cities in 2010, including New York, Boston, District of Columbia, Houston, San Francisco Bay area, Denver, Minneapolis, and Kansas City.
