Dude, You're Getting a Dell - With WiMAX!

dell studio w/ wimaxLaptops with embedded EVDO chips never quite "took off", as customers proved to prefer the versatility of aircards, but it looks like manufacturers will be trying again with 4G. Dell has announced that their latest line of Studio notebooks will feature optional WiMAX capabilities. When ordering a new Dell Studio, customers can add an embedded 4G chip for about $60 that will allow them to sign up for service with Sprint or Clearwire for WiMAX service without the need for an external modem.

The problems that many potential buyers had with embedded EVDO chips will likely apply to 4G chips as well: inability to share with a router, lack of an antenna port for boosting the signal, and the difficulty in getting the chips repaired or replaced if problems arise. With EVDO costing $59.99/mo ($79.99/mo back when it first debuted!) many consumers were hesitant to accept those limitations, but perhaps with the low-cost Clearwire plans - and the fact that they DO NOT require a contract - laptops with embedded WiMAX (or LTE, when that comes around!) chips will prove more popular than their EVDO predecessors.

What do you think? Would you buy a laptop with an embedded 4G chip or do you prefer an external modem (like an aircard)? Discuss embedded WiMAX on the 4G Forums.
