LightSquared in Congressional Hearing over 4G LTE network

LightSquared's 4G LTE network has made its way into Washington, where the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology held a hearing regarding issues with GPS interference. Associate director of natural hazards indicated that potential interference could be disastrous on GPS mechanisms used to predict floods, landslides and volcanic eruptions. Another representative from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicated this would also create issues for weather forecasters too. LightSquared Executive Vice President Jeffrey Carlisle, tried to defend their company pointing out an amended version that was submitted to the FCC on Wednesday.

The revised documents will allow LightSquared to offer reduced network power, which will provide a stable signal for GPS augmentation. Carlisle indicated "only 500,000 to 750,000 high-end GPS services would be affected by LightSquared's low-frequency alternative", and those issues result from pre-existing receiver problems in the GPS industry that should've been addressed. The majority of lawmakers have indicated that a wider wireless coverage range is important, but can't jeopardize critical transit or emergency response systems.
