LightSquared is nearing an 8-year agreement with Sprint, worth approximately $2 billion per year, which would allow them to use Sprint's network equipment and towers. Within the proposed agreement, they'd pay Sprint $2 billion per year to rent space on their network in order to launch their own high-speed network, according to a person who asked not to be named because the details aren't public yet. LightSquared will be backed by Falcone's Harbinger Capital Partners, using Sprint's network on approximately 40,000 cellular broadcast towers with their own wireless airwaves to provide high-speed service.
"Two billion dollars a year would be in the right ballpark for a network-sharing agreement," said a second person on the subject, but that person didn't mention anything else in regards to the potential deal. The spokeswoman from LightSquared declined to comment and nobody from Sprint was available to question. This is a scenario that has the potential to be a win/win solution for both LightSquared and Sprint by helping them pay for a $5 billion network modernization plan announced last year. Sprint has stated that they'll be announcing more details on their network plans around midyear.
