Earlier this week
we noted President Obama's idea to bring high speed wireless internet to users in rural areas. To meet this goal and provide wireless connectivity for 98% of Americans, the FCC wants to free up 500Mhz of wireless spectrum over the next decade. Obama has announced a plan to make this goal a reality by allowing broadcast TV companies to take part in voluntary spectrum auctions and share the profits. This plan will consist of a $5 billion investment to construct 4G networks in rural areas, a $3 billion fund for research and development and $10.7 billion for a wireless public safety network. The spectrum auctions are anticipated to raise $27.8 billion, which covers the $18.7 costs to build out this network and they've dedicated $9.6 billion to reducing the U.S. deficit. So far the government has secured 115Mhz worth of Federal spectrum and another 95Mhz within reach.
