Sprint has been busy consistently launching their 4G WiMAX service in new cities over the past few months, including areas of NY, CA, WA and OR (view all WiMAX markets). As many 4G-watchers are well aware, WiMAX is not the only 4G technology - a second 4G technology called LTE, which operates on a different frequency than WiMAX, is being developed by other providers, including Verizon. Interestingly, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has stated that Sprint has the frequencies available to deploy both WiMAX and LTE networks. This statement hints that they're considering adding future LTE support in addition to their current WiMAX network. Hesse also admitted "there was a certain logic" to a possible merger with T-Mobile which would allow them to get even more cellular penetration throughout the country. Hesse declined to comment further on this scenario but if it happens, Sprint could position themselves as an even more dominant cellular provider, with their existing (and growing) WiMAX network and possibly an LTE network as well!
