According to an interview with Fiercewireless, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse indicated that Sprint will be phasing out their iDEN Nextel (push-to-talk) service. Hess said "as customers sign up for Sprint's CDMA network rather than iDEN, the closure of the latter will free up the 800MHz iDEN frequency". This will ultimately force iDEN Nextel customers to switch over to Sprint for push to talk over their 3G network. This move could make room for the CDMA 1x Advanced network, indicated Bob Azzi, senior VP of networks at Sprint. No comment was made on what type of performance we could expect over this "1x Advanced Network". It's clear that Sprint is focused on removing older technologies and focusing on their WiMAX 4G and debating about offering LTE through the lower spectrum frequencies although this wouldn't occur for at least three to four years under their current plans.
