Wireless providers Sprint and Clearwire have recently formed a partnership to develop and eventually deploy their WiMAX networks in the USA (service is currently available in some parts of the world, including India and Pakistan), and LTE producers AT&T are making an effort to prevent the merger from going through.
AT&T appealed to the FCC to keep the Clearwire/Sprint merger from going through, essentially to buy themselves some time to introduce their LTE broadband services. Neither Sprint nor Clearwire has the capabilities to roll out WiMAX coverage in a timely manner without the other.
So long as the FCC ignores AT&T and allows Sprint/Clearwire to move forward, it is expected that the service could become available in select USA metro areas by the end of the year, including DC, Chicago, and Baltimore..
